The
worldwide known beach resort of Cancún is a great setting for
the warm weather traveler. Not so well known are the wonderfull and
unexplored flats fishing grounds north of Cancún where the
solitude, the great bay, the vast expanse of flats, hidden lagoons
rimmed with mangroves... An endless, isolated world of turquoise shallows,
it seems never to end.
This
area is quite pristine and is home to many different species of birds,
including rarely seen ibis, spoon bills, jabirus, flamingoes, white
pelicans, and frigates hovering above the small islands catching the
rising currents of air; herons and ibis wade and hunt the margins.
Rays and lobster track the bottom. Barracuda hang motionless and then
are gone.
In
this area, anglers have a very good chance of getting a super grand
slam (tarpon, snoock, bonefish and permit) in a few days of fishing.
Our
main targeted species are tarpon ( 10-100 lbs ), snook ( 5-25 lbs
), bonefish ( 1-5 lbs ), permit ( 3-20 lbs ), snapper ( 1-10 lbs ),
barracuda ( 1-15 lbs ), sea trout ( 1-4 lbs ), among many other fish
like cobia, baby sharks, african pampano, grouper, yellow tail snapper,
etc.
The
area produces fish all year around, except during bad weather when
the flats cannot be worked leaving bonefish and permit out of our
range.
Peak
months for all species are march through december.
The
area that we fish is only 30-45 minutes drive north of Cancún,
our guide will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel every day,
with only a few days of fishing anglers will experience fishing in
shallow sandy flats, lagoons, chanels, holes in the flats, grassy
flats, mangrove flats and open ocean. Most all of the fishing is done
from the boat, although there are a few flats that can be waded.
Our
guides have been fishing the lagoons for the past fourteen years,
knowing all of the hidden places from this vast area.
All
of the fishing can be done with light fly fishing tackle, we recomend
anglers to bring their own gear. Fly fishermen need to have at least
one 8 weight rod. Reels should be high quality and saltwater proof.
Floating jigs are the most practical. Use of sinking line is not necessary
as the waters are shallow. If you do not have the equipment we can
suply it to you.
Popular
fly patterns for snook, tarpon, barracuda, snapper and sea trout include,
deceivers in various colors, coack roach, tarpon glo, and poppers
(sizes 2/0-4 for all patterns). Bone fish and permit fly selections
should include crazy charlies (rootbeer, pink, gold, pear) sizes 2/8
crab patterns (mottled brown and green) sizes 4-6.
Light
tackle is best for this area. Light spinning rods 7´ with matching
reel loaded with 8-10 lb test (200 yds), work best for bonefish and
permit. Live crabs and small jigs with saltwater hooks work best for
tarpon, snook and barracuda. Recommended lures are mirro lures, devil
horse, floating rapalas 3-5 in. In lenght and tube jigs.
